TECHNICAL NOTE COUNTS OF PASSENGER VEHICLES BY MAKE

INTRODUCTION

1 Significant improvements were made during the 2013 MVC to the translation of Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) makes and models.

ISSUE

2 MVRs use different means of coding vehicle makes and models. The ABS uses a system to translate these to consistent make and model identifiers. This translation has been significantly improved since the 2012 MVC, in particular for vehicles which had previously been translated as "Unknown Models" of their respective make. Data for previously unknown models has been recoded using an improved translation. As a result, there has been a substantial increase in specificity for make and model and a commensurate decrease in the number of "unknown models".

IMPACT

3 The majority of impacts have been at the model level. There has been minimal impact on counts for makes. However there are some differences in 2012 counts by make compared with those counts published in the 2012 MVC.

4 There has been a more substantial impact for Range Rover and Land Rover makes. The old translation led to the majority of Range Rover models being recorded as "Land Rover Unknown Models". The update has led to more accurate coding to the relevant Range Rover model. As a result there is now an apparent reduction in the number of Land Rovers and a significant (42.3%) increase in the number of Range Rovers. This increase moves Range Rover into the top 30 Passenger Vehicle makes.
