The production of construction materials is basic to all building activity and consequently affects most parts of the economy. Buildings, roads and most services depend on the availability of construction materials and the local production of these materials is one way to control costs.
Production of construction materials takes place throughout Tasmania.

|Quarries at Birralee, Ridgley, Pipers River, Talisker and Western Junction in northern Tasmania produced 355,000 tonnes (including 123,000 tonnes of miscellaneous fill for domestic construction, 115,000 tonnes of road construction material base and sub base, 54,000 tonnes of aggregates for concrete and brick production and 46,000 tonnes of road surface finishing materials, aggregate and dust).|
|Caroline Quarries||The Railton quarry produced 18,230 tonnes of silica sand and 850 tonnes of road gravel and sand|
