Assembles, positions and detonates explosives at mining sites.

Skill Level:
The entry requirement for this occupation is an AQF Certificate II or higher qualification or at least 1 years relevant experience. Registration or licensing may be required.

Tasks Include:
  • inspects blasting areas and ensures observance of safety regulations
  • cuts channels under working faces
  • checks bore-hole depths and cleans holes
  • inserts high explosives into holes or positions hoses and fills holes with blasting agents or liquid slurry explosives
  • assembles primers using detonators and explosive cartridges, and attaches wires, fuses or detonating cords
  • inserts primers into holes and connects detonating cords to ring mains
  • fills and tamps holes with rock dust, sand or other materials
  • connects wires, fuses or detonator cords into series, tests electrical circuits and repairs malfunctions
  • ensures all explosives are detonated and declares areas safe
  • identifies, corrects and reports misfires
