Assembles, positions and detonates explosives at mining sites.

Skill Level:
The entry requirement for this occupation is an AQF Certificate II or higher qualification or at least 1 years relevant experience. Registration or licensing may be required.

Tasks Include:

inspects blasting areas and ensures observance of safety regulations
cuts channels under working faces
checks bore-hole depths and cleans holes
inserts high explosives into holes or positions hoses and fills holes with blasting agents or liquid slurry explosives
assembles primers using detonators and explosive cartridges, and attaches wires, fuses or detonating cords
inserts primers into holes and connects detonating cords to ring mains
fills and tamps holes with rock dust, sand or other materials
connects wires, fuses or detonator cords into series, tests electrical circuits and repairs malfunctions
ensures all explosives are detonated and declares areas safe
identifies, corrects and reports misfires
