At the 2001 Census, some 89.5% of people counted in Tasmania who stated a birthplace were Australian-born. The largest overseas-born group was from the United Kingdom and Ireland, 21,910 people, followed by New Zealand, 3,590, the Netherlands, 2,484, and Germany, 1,909.

Of Tasmanian local government areas (LGAs), the LGAs with the highest proportions of their populations stating that they were born in Australia were Southern Midlands, with 95.2% of its population born in Australia, Brighton, 94.9%, Central Highlands, 94.3% and Dorset, 94.1%. The Greater Hobart-Southern Region was the Region with the lowest proportion of its population born in Australia. In that Region, Hobart with 81.9% of its population born in Australia and Kingborough with 83.4% had the lowest proportions of their populations born in Australia.
