There were 81,657 separations (a hospital transfer, discharge or death) from Tasmanian public hospitals in 2001-02, an 8.7% increase from the 1999-2000 figure of 75,155 (source: Regional Statistics, Tasmania, 2001 - cat. no. 1362.6). In 2001-02, people living in the Greater Hobart-Southern Region accounted for 47.4% of separations, while people in the Northern Region accounted for 33.4%, and people in the Mersey-Lyell Region accounted for 18.1% of total separations.

Some 18.3% of separations from Tasmanian public hospitals occurred among people diagnosed with diseases and disorders of the kidney and urinary tract, the most common diagnostic category in the state. It was also the most common public hospital diagnostic category for each Region, accounting for 17.4% of separations for residents in both the Greater Hobart-Southern Region and the Northern Region, and 21.9% of separations in the Mersey-Lyell Region.

There were 71,764 separations from Tasmanian private hospitals in 2001-02. Diseases and disorders of the digestive system accounted for 14.5% of private hospital separations, making it the most common diagnostic category for private hospitals in the state.
