Child Care Benefit helps with the cost of child care for:

  • long day care
  • vacation care
  • family day care
  • registered care
  • in-home care
  • occasional care
  • outside school hours care.
The Benefit can be paid directly to child care services to reduce the fees charged, or as a lump sum to parents in October following the previous financial year. It is subject to an income test but is not subject to an assets test.

As at 1 June 2001, the highest rates of Child Care Benefit recipients were in the local government areas of Sorell (42.3 per 1,000 persons) and Kingborough (40.2 per 1,000 persons).
