SMOKE FREE TASMANIA

Smoke Free Tasmania coordinates tobacco control issues in Tasmania. It is a coalition of health groups, societies and unions, including:

  • Heart Foundation
  • Cancer Council of Tasmania
  • Asthma Tasmania
  • Public Health Association
  • Australian Medical Association
  • Adventist Health
  • Australian Lung Foundation
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand
  • Australian Hospitality, Liquor and Miscellaneous Workers' Union
  • Pharmaceutical Society of Australia.


SMOKE-FREE AREAS

In 2001, Smoke Free Tasmania led a public health campaign to secure comprehensive Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) legislation in Tasmania.

That legislation, Public Health Amendment (Smoke-Free Areas) Act 2001 (Tas.) commenced on 3 September 2001. It secured, for the first time in Tasmania, smoke-free enclosed public places and workplaces. The Act represents an important first step in protecting the public and employees from the harmful health effects of environmental tobacco smoke.

The ETS legislation will be reviewed in September 2002 and Smoke Free Tasmania will advocate that smoke-free areas be extended.


SUMMARY OF THE ETS LEGISLATION

Under the Public Health Amendment (Smoke-Free Areas) Act 2001 (Tas.) the following areas are deemed smoke-free:
  • Enclosed public places and workplaces
  • Work vehicles (used at work with another person present)
  • Restaurants and cafes (enclosed areas)
  • Dining areas, corridors, toilets and common areas in hospitality venues
  • Bars in rooms must contain a smoke free area
  • Building entrances smoke free within 3 metres
  • Air conditioning intakes that serve multiple use or domestic buildings are smoke free within 10 metres.
