In 2003-04, there was an average labour force participation rate of 59.0% in Tasmania. The participation rate ranged from a low of 56.6% in the Mersey-Lyell Region to 60.9% in the Northern Region.

The 2003-04 average unemployment rate was 6.9% for Tasmania. The unemployment rate ranged from a low of 6.2% in the Greater Hobart-Southern Region to 7.8% in the Northern Region.
