The Greater Hobart-Southern Region of Tasmania is not rich in minerals. A thermal coal supply is located at Hamilton, north west of Hobart. Approximately four to six years supply of coal, or about 600 kt, await production. As at November 2002, a mining lease over the deposit was to change hands, from Kimbolton Coal Company Pty Ltd to Australian Cement Holdings Pty Ltd.
