DESCRIPTION

The Australian Non-government Schools Census provides information on the number of schools,students (including Indigenous), teaching and non-teaching staff in non-government systemic, independent and special schools in Australia. Census data are used in Australian Government per capita recurrent funding of the non-government school sector. Although some information from this collection is published in Schools, Australia (cat. no. 4221.0) (see National Schools Statistics Collection entry in this Directory), the collection can also provide further details such as the detailed affiliations of schools, information on students who speak English as a second language and students with disabilities.

GEOGRAPHY

Information is available for Australia and all states and territories.


METHOD OF COLLECTION

The collection is a census conducted in August each year via the Internet. The data are collected by DEST directly from each non-government school.


TIMING OF COLLECTION

Reference Period

First week in August each year. The actual date is agreed by the Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA).

Frequency of Collection

Annual.

Historical Data

Data are available from July 1985. The data was previously published in:
Department of Employment, Education and Training, Census of Non-government Schools, AGPS, Canberra.
This publication was discontinued in 1989.
