Information and communication technology (ICT) and ICT goods and services (or products) play an important role in the way in which people live and do business. Essentially, ICT products include computer hardware, computer software, telecommunication assets, computer services and telecommunication services. There is considerable interest in the role of ICT and ICT products in social and economic development in Australia. ICT products are closely associated with the phenomenon of the 'new economy', and with other events such as the 'dotcom' age and the privatisation of telecommunication that has occurred in a number of countries over the past two decades. Much of the demand for information on ICT products has been driven by interest in the uptake of new technologies and in the impact ICT may have had on business performance in Australia. This chapter presents information on the characteristics and performance of industries involved in the production of ICT goods and services. It also provides statistics on Internet activity and the use of information technology by businesses, households and farms.
