  • About this Release

A file containing unit record data from the Household Expenditure Survey (HES) and the Survey of Income and Housing (SIH). It is confidentialised and as such contains no names and addresses and the detail for some items of data has been reduced. Four individual microdata files are available: the basic files for HES and SIH are distributed on CD-ROM or can be accessed via the Remote Access Data Laboratory; the expanded files for HES and SIH are only able to be accessed via the Remote Access Data Laboratory. Subject to the limitation of sample size and the data classifications used, it is possible to manipulate the data, produce tabulations and undertake statistical analyses to individual specifications.

This release includes two corrections to the HES Basic and Expanded CURFs. The SIH Basic and Expanded CURFs have not been impacted by these changes.

In order to resolve an issue with the value label formats for the SPSS and STATA files, the following items have been changed from a character variable to a numeric variable for SAS, SPSS and STATA files:
1. Expenditure code (COMCODE)
2. Classification of Individual Consumption by Purpose (COICOP)

There has also been a correction made to the following items, as the items provided in the initial release undercounted the number of persons attending different types of schools:
1. Number of persons in household attending catholic primary school (HES only),
2. Number of persons in household attending catholic secondary school (HES only)
3. Number of persons in household attending government primary school (HES only)
4. Number of persons in household attending government secondary school (HES only)
5. Number of persons in household attending non-government primary school (HES only)
6. Number of persons in household attending non-government secondary school (HES only)
7. Number of persons in household attending preschool (HES only)
