Australia's casino industry, 1995-96

Data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today showed that gross income in 1995-96 for the 14 casinos in Australia was $2,230.7 million. This represented an increase of 36 per cent since 1994-95. The major source of income was takings from gambling of $1,881.2 million which accounted for 84 per cent of gross income.

The casino industry generated an operating profit before tax of $198.0 million which equates to an operating profit margin of 8.9 per cent. By comparison, the operating profit margin for the casino industry was 6.5 per cent in 1994-95 and 14.8 per cent in 1991-92.

At the end of June 1996 there were 18,490 persons employed by the casino industry, an increase of 17 per cent since June 1995. Full time employment in the industry increased by 26 per cent, from 11,005 to 13,840.

There were 13 per cent more gaming/poker machines and 15 per cent more gaming tables located in casinos at the end of June 1996 than there were at the end of June 1995. Takings per gaming table increased from $1,173,000 in 1994-95 to $1,391,000 in 1995-96.

Casinos operated by the four largest enterprise groups involved in the casino industry accounted for 74 per cent of employment at the end of June 1996 and 80 per cent of gross income for the year.
