One in four Tasmanians will be over 65 by 2021

The proportion of Tasmanians aged 65 and over is projected to almost double from that of 30 June 1999, according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today.

At June 30 1999, 13 per cent of the Tasmanian population was aged 65 or over. This is expected to reach 22-23 per cent by 30 June 2021.

The median age of Tasmanians is projected to increase from 36 years at 30 June 1999 to 44-45 years by 30 June 2021, a rate faster than Australia's population as a whole. The proportion of the population aged 14 years and under could fall from 21 per cent to 15-16 per cent over the same period.

The population of Tasmania is expected to change from 470,800 at 30 June 1999 to between 434,500 and 479,300 by 30 June 2021.
