Enrolments up at ACT's non-government schools

Enrolments in ACT non-government schools increased from 32% to 41% of total enrolments between August 1984 and August 2004, according to new analysis released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today.

The ACT's government school enrolments declined from 68% to 59% of the total for the same period.

The analysis also showed that Canberran school students had the highest apparent retention rate of all states and territories at August 2004.

The apparent retention rate for full-time students in the ACT increased from 80% in August 1984 to 89% in August 2004, almost 13 percentage points above the national average (76%). Male students had a higher retention rate than females in 2004 (90% versus 87%).

At August 2004, the student-to-teacher ratio for ACT primary schools was 15.4, lower than the national average of 16.4. The student-to-teacher ratio was lower for government schools than non-government schools, at both primary and secondary levels.
