Businesses expect small rise in operating income - ABS

Business expectations for operating income are up 1.7 per cent for the coming June quarter compared with March quarter 1998, according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

This is the second lowest expected rise in a June quarter since the Australian Business Expectations Survey began in December quarter 1993.

Small businesses expect an increase of 0.3 per cent, medium sized businesses expect an increase of 2.1 per cent and large businesses expect an increase of 3.3 per cent.

All industries are expected to increase operating income in the short term with the largest rise expected by businesses in the Manufacturing industry (3.7 per cent) and the lowest expected rise by businesses in the Accommodation, Cafes and Restaurants industry (0.1 per cent).

In the medium term, operating income is expected to rise 2.6 per cent in the March quarter 1999 compared to the March quarter 1998. All industries expect an increase with the largest rise expected by businesses in the Mining industry (5.3 per cent). Small businesses expect an increase of 1.9 per cent, medium sized businesses expect an increase of 2.4 per cent and large businesses expect an increase of 3.7 per cent.

Businesses expect profits to rise by 13.1 per cent in the March quarter 1999 compared to the March quarter 1998.

The survey suggests that low inflation is becoming entrenched in the minds of business owners. Price rises are expected to remain at low levels at 0.3 per cent over the short term and 0.8 per cent over the medium term.
