ABS confirms - no man drought in the Northern Territory

There are more men than women in the Northern Territory, according to the latest figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Across the Territory there were 111 men for every 100 women, higher than the national ratio of 99 men for every 100 women at 30 June 2003.

The Darwin & Environs region (see media note) had the highest proportion of men, with 113 men for every 100 women. The Central Region had the lowest, with 107 men for every 100 women.

Other highlights from the publication Regional Statistics, Northern Territory include:
  • The Darwin & Environs area had the highest proportion of speeding fines, making up 75% of traffic infringement notices issued in the area in 2004. The Darwin Region Balance area had the highest proportion of notices issued for not wearing a seatbelt (18% of notices).
  • The Darwin Region Balance area had the highest rate of people receiving the Newstart Allowance (173 per 1,000 people), Single Parenting Payment (39 per 1,000 people) and Youth Allowance (34 per 1,000 people), while the Central Region had the highest rate of people receiving the Age Pension (33 per 1,000 people) at June 2003.
  • The majority of public housing applicants in the Katherine and Barkly Regions waited six months or less to be allocated public housing during 2003-04 (72% and 60% respectively). This contrasts with the East Arnhem and Central Regions, where the majority waited more than 12 months (75% and 63% respectively).
  • The East Arnhem region recorded the highest average taxable income ($48,578 per person) in 2001-02. The Barkly Region had the lowest ($35,899).
  • The Darwin Region Balance area had the highest proportion of Indigenous people (78% of the region's population) at 30 June 2001. The Darwin & Environs area had the lowest proportion (11%).
