ABS launches search for Census field staff in south east NSW

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has begun the first stage of a recruitment drive for field staff in the Bombala, Bega Valley, Cooma-Monaro, Queanbeyan City, Palerang and Snowy River local government regions.

Census recruitment will be done in two stages over the next few months. The ABS is now concentrating on the recruitment of Area Supervisors. About 3,500 Area Supervisors will be employed nation wide.

Area Supervisors are responsible for the recruitment, training and management of the Census Collectors in their area. In April the ABS will recruit about 26,000 Collectors nation-wide. The Collectors will deal directly with the public, moving from door to door to deliver and collect Census forms.

Alan Masters, Manager of Census Operations in the ACT and South East NSW, said the ABS relies on the community to help make Census a success.

"The Census is one of the largest peacetime recruitment operations in Australia's history and while these are paid positions, many of our Area Supervisors and Collectors see this as an important chance to make their communities count," he said.

"The Census gives us a snapshot of every community across Australia on one night every five years. This information is invaluable in helping us to understand the specific characteristics of every individual community and is essential to help plan for the future."

"Area Supervisors and Collectors will be helping to ensure every household in the area is counted on Census Night. This is no simple task, but it is a challenge our field staff have risen to in the past and I am confident they will do so again this year."

People wanting to apply for these positions can go to www.abs.gov.au/recruitment or call 1300 (CENSUS) 236 787.

Media note: The ACT Regional Office of the ABS is managing Census operations in the ACT and NSW shire council areas of Cooma-Monaro, Snowy River, Bombala, Bega Valley, Palerang and Queanbeyan City.
