NT population increase - June 2003 results released

Northern Territory's population increased by 580 people in the three months ending 30 June 2003, according to the figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today.

Whilst this quarterly increase offsets some of the decline in the Northern Territory's population over the previous 6 months, overall there has been a small decline of 310 people (0.2%) over the full 2002-03 financial year.

This quarter's growth in population was primarily due to a reduction in the NT's net loss of population to other states and territories. March Quarter 2003 saw a net loss of population interstate of almost 1,200 people, compared to a net loss of 300 people interstate in the June Quarter 2003.

The ABS said it was too early to determine if the population increase for the June quarter 2003 was heralding a turnaround in the trend of declining population observed in the NT over the last two years.

Today's release contains the latest available data on natural increase (the excess of births over deaths), net interstate migration and net overseas migration and their contribution to the population size and growth of the Australian states and territories.

Further details are in Australian Demographic Statistics, June Quarter 2003 (cat. no. 3101.0).
