8 Months to go until the Census of Population and Housing on 8 August 2006 These days it is well known that if a pregnant woman is infected with rubella, or German measles, it can cause abnormalities in the unborn child. But it took an Australian doctor's hunch and a careful analysis of Australian Census figures to confirm the link. As related in Informing a Nation, The Evolution of the Australian Bureau of Statistics, "this was the first time in the world that the link between rubella and congenital problems with unborn children was firmly established." Articles based on the Census chapter of this recently published book, including the one on rubella, have been placed on the ABS website at www.abs.gov.au/census. These articles can be downloaded and reproduced. Document Selection These documents will be presented in a new window.
