Tasmanians love going to the market

Going to markets was the most popular of the surveyed leisure and culture activities undertaken by Tasmanians in the year ending October 2000.

Survey results released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today show that 69% of Tasmanians aged 15 years and over had attended a regular Tasmanian market at least once in the 12-month period.

As well, the survey showed:

  • 60% had attended one or more selected major Tasmanian annual events such as the Taste of Tasmania, with 29% attendance;
  • 57% had attended one or more selected cultural venues or activities in Tasmania;
  • 43% had participated in at least one selected outdoor recreation activity, such as day bushwalking with 24% participation; and
  • 38% had visited a pub, club or casino to use electronic gaming machines.

Of those attending pubs, clubs or casinos to use electronic gaming machines, attendance rates were higher among females (41%) than males (34%). Attendance rates were lowest for those aged 55 years and over (31%).
