1998 Western Australian Year Book provides statistical look at the state

The 1998 Western Australian Year Book released today shows that Western Australia continues to be Australia's major exporting State. In 1996-97, 24.5 per cent of Australia's exports came from Western Australia.

It points out that Japan continues to be Western Australia's major export market and the USA is the largest import supplier. Gold bullion and iron ore accounted for 31.5 per cent of Western Australia's exports.

The 342 page publication, produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, contains comprehensive statistical information on a range of vital State issues including the environment, government, education, the economy, commerce, tourism, labour force and international trade. It is an excellent resource on Western Australian and a good on-going source for media reporting.

Also included in this edition are a number of special feature articles. These include:
  • the Western Australian Child Health Survey;
  • events in Perth 1997;
  • the Transcontinental Railway;
  • the Ashburton Floods;
  • the Regal Opera;
  • the Chelsea Flower Show 1997; and,
  • Vocational Educational and Training in Western Australia.
