MARK YOUR NEWS CALENDARS FOR JUNE 17: FIRST RESULTS FROM 2001 CENSUS TO BE RELEASED


The first results from the 2001 Census will officially be released back to the community on Monday, June 17, 2002 at 10:30am (EST) by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

What's on offer:

National launch - a national launch is being held at the ABS Data Processing Centre, 45 Jones Street Ultimo, Sydney on Monday, June 17, 2002 at 10:00am sharp (EST). Public attendance is strictly by invitation only.

The Australian Statistician, Dennis Trewin will release the first results with social researcher and author, Hugh Mackay as special guest speaker. Special presentations will be made to key organisations who rely on these census results to plan for Australia's future.

State/Territory media events - in conjunction with the national launch in Sydney, a separate media event will be held in every other capital city as per the table below. Public attendance is strictly by invitation only.

Vision Opportunities - Besides the speeches, interview prospects and special presentations, file footage showing data processing, census form destruction and census collectors at work will be distributed to media. High resolution images of the same are available on request.

Media information kits - A comprehensive information kit will be available at the national launch and all other capital city events. A vast array of detailed 2001 Census results down to local areas will be available on the ABS website (www.abs.gov.au) from 10:30am on June 17 as well. The website will be highly useful for suburban metropolitan print and non-metro media who are seeking local stories.

The 2001 Census was held on August 7 last year and is a comprehensive snapshot of Australia. It provides a primary source of information used by a wide range of government and non-government organisations alike in planning for the future.
