FEATURE ARTICLE 4: ABS DEMOGRAPHY INITIATIVES AND TRAINING

NEW DATA VISUALISATION INITIATIVE

The ABS is trialling a short and simple video presentation which highlights interesting features and key findings from the Australian Demographic Statistics (cat. no. 3101.0) publication in an accessible and easy to understand format.

The video provides a quick overview of important information from the release, in an easy to digest form. It serves as a companion product to the Australian Demographic Statistics (cat. no. 3101.0) publication, which contains Australia's official population estimates and information on how the population is changing over time.

You can access the video by clicking on the following link: Click to watch. The ABS is also keen to hear your thoughts on the video, to help us make improvements and determine the value of producing video content in the future. Please have a look and tell us what you think: demography@abs.gov.au.

ABS DEMOGRAPHIC TRAINING COURSE

Do you want to know more about population statistics? How we measure the population? How it is changing? What the future might be?

The ABS periodically runs 'Understanding Demographic Data', a single day course providing a broad overview of demographic data, how the ABS estimates the population every quarter and key population trends.

Past participants have found the course incredibly valuable, with its engaging workshop format (facilitated by experienced ABS demographers) providing ample opportunities for discussion and practical activities. It is particularly valuable for participants who are using demographic data or interested in population topics, but who haven't had previous training in the field and are keen to make greater use of population information.

Some of the trends that will be covered during the day include:

  • Population ageing;
  • Changes in migration, fertility and mortality over time;
  • High growth and low growth regions, and the growth of capital cities;
  • Interstate migration and the movement of people within Australia; and
  • Changes in the size and composition of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population.
