The Australian Bureau of Statistics is committed to protecting your privacy in accordance with the Privacy Commissioner’s Guidelines. The guidelines set out the requirements for transparent collection, appropriate and ethical use and secure storage of personal information. Our aim is to provide an online environment which will ensure the information you provide to us is handled in a secure, efficient and confidential manner.


The ABS logs the following information to analyse use of the ABS web site:
  • your server address
  • the date and time of the visit to the site
  • the pages accessed and documents downloaded
  • the previous site visited
  • the type of browser and operating system used.
If you send us an e-mail message, we will only use your e-mail address for the purpose for which you provided it and it will not be added to a mailing list. We will not use your e-mail address for any other purpose, and will not disclose it, without your consent.

To purchase ABS products online, your web browser will need to accept cookies. The ABS web site uses single-session cookies for this purpose. If you don't want to accept cookies, a range of off-line purchasing methods are available. Some ABS online products, eg CLIB 2001, also require your web browser to accept persistent cookies. If you do not or cannot store cookies, stand-alone versions of these products may be available.

Where your personal information is requested by the ABS web site, it will only be used for the purpose stated and will not be disclosed beyond the ABS without your consent. However, in exceptional circumstances in which the ABS is required by law to release information, such as in the investigation of a criminal offence, and in compliance with a search warrant or subpoena, your personal data may be disclosed.

This site is accredited and maintained to Commonwealth Government Internet security standards to ensure the confidentiality and/or integrity of information posted on the site. These standards meet or exceed Australian information security management standards (AS/NZS 4444).

The information you provide through the web site will be kept secure within the ABS. If you prefer not to submit information via the web site, you can send the information via the ABS National Information & Referral Service (details below). If you take this approach, please make it clear which part of the web site you are responding to.
