Purpose

To measure the number and key characteristics of persons and dwellings in Australia on census night. Among other things, the information is used for forward planning by government, industry and community groups.


Description

The Census is conducted every five years and is an enumeration of the entire population. Information is collected from all Australian households by self-completion questionnaires.


Data Detail

        • Demography (e.g. age, sex, marital status);
        • Dwellings (e.g. number of bedrooms, rent, mortgage);
        • Education;
        • Ethnicity (e.g. birthplace, year of arrival);
        • Income;
        • Labour force (e.g. status, occupation, industry); and
        • Transport.

In relation to transport, data are available for number of motor vehicles garaged, journey to work by mode of travel (includes origin/destination detail for selected areas), and a profiling capability for people working in the transport industry.


Geographic Coverage

Australia, States and Territories. Data are classified according to the ASGC and are available for small areas down to Collection District.


Frequency of Data Availability

Data are available every five years.


Historical Data

The first census conducted by the Commonwealth of Australia was held in 1911 and censuses have been held at irregular intervals to 1961. Since 1961, a census has been conducted every five years, with the latest being 1996.

Publications
Various publications are available and are listed in the
1996 Directory of Census Statistics (cat. no. 2910.0).

Other
Community profiles are available in hard copy and all standard electronic formats. Customers with personal computers are supplied with simple data selection, viewing and aggregation software.


Internet. A range of Community profile data and publications main features are available free of charge via the ABS web site at <www.abs.gov.au> (select the Census button).

CDATA96. A CD-ROM product which contains census and digital map data and data manipulation and mapping software.

Customised tables. Customers with personal computers are supplied with simple data selection, viewing and aggregation software.


Map data are available in hard copy and all common digital forms.
