Purpose
To determine how much education and training is being undertaken, by whom and with how much employer or non-employer support.

Description
This survey provides details of the education and training experiences of persons who had worked as wage or salary earners in the previous 12 months, as well as those who, at the time of the survey, were employed, unemployed or marginally attached to the labour force, or were in full-time or part-time education.

Personal interviews were conducted at a sample of about 18,600 dwellings, yielding approximately 22,700 completed personal interviews.

Data Detail

  • Socio-demographic characteristics (including earnings and educational attainment);
  • Labour force characteristics (including industry of current job/business);
  • Work history details (such as main-period occupation, industry and job tenure);
  • Educational qualifications held;
  • Recent study for educational qualifications;
  • Intended future study;
  • Non-completed qualifications;
  • Details of training courses completed in the last 12 months;
  • Training outcomes;
  • Access to education and training; and
  • Training provision.

    Data are available for the above items for the transport industry and for other ASIC and ANZSIC industry classifications down to the three digit (i.e. group) level, although at that level some cross-classifications may be subject to high standard errors.

    Geographic Coverage
    Australia, States and Territories. Information is also available for labour force dissemination regions throughout Australia, but may be subject to high standard errors.

    Frequency of Data Availability
    These surveys are irregular. Data from the 1997 survey were released in November 1998.

    Historical Data
    Data are available from the 1989, 1993 and 1997 surveys, although there is some variation in data items across surveys.

    A Confidentialised Unit Record File (CURF) is available from both the 1989 and the 1993 surveys. A CURF is expected to be available from the 1997 survey.
