Purpose
To gain a better understanding of the distribution of freight and commercial traffic in the Greater Sydney Metropolitan Region (GSMR).

Description
The collection was a 12-month sample survey of 10,000 non-privately registered vehicles in the GSMR and was conducted in respect of 1991-92. It collected vehicle and travel details for the sampled commercial vehicles over a nominated 24-hour period.

Data were expanded (weighted) to represent the total number of commercial vehicles registered in the TDC Study Area. Data were collected by mail questionnaire.

Data Detail
Vehicle details:

  • Vehicle type;
  • Body type;
  • Use of trailer; and
  • State of registration.

Trip details:
  • Travel day;
  • Origin/destination SLA;
  • Start/arrival time;
  • Travel time;
  • Distance;
  • Speed;
  • Commodity;
  • Weight of load; and
  • Whether goods were delivered or picked up.

Geographic Coverage
GSMR (Sydney, Central Coast, Newcastle, Wollongong, Blue Mountains).

Frequency of Data Availability
Data are only available in respect of 1991-92. A new Commercial Transport Study is being developed to provide better estimates of freight travel in Sydney.
