Sport and Recreation: A Statistical Overview, Australia was originally released in hard copy and as a pdf file in November 2003. It was subsequently released in an on-line format on 29 March 2006 with a view to it being progressively updated as more recent data became available. In this edition (2007 Edition 1), the scope of the publication has been reduced and now excludes the chapters relating to Other Leisure. Accordingly, the publication has been renamed Sports and Physical Recreation: A Statistical Overview, Australia. The changes since 2006 Edition 2 are

  • chapter 8 contains new data for building approvals of sports and physcial recreation buildings
  • chapter 8 contains new data for engineering construction of sports and physcial recreation facilities
  • chapter 11 contains new data for international trade in sports and physcial recreation products
  • chapters 12–14 have been deleted
  • data from chapter 13 which have relevance for sports and physical recreation have been transferred to chapter 10 – these data concern sports hospitality clubs, toy and sporting good manufacturers, and toy and sporting good wholesalers.

In addition, corrections have been made to table 3.7 in chapter 3.4. The number of females in 2003 who had a profound core activity limitation (9,800) – and the participation rate for these females (4.5%) – have now been marked with asterisks to indicate that these estimates should be used with caution because their relative standard errors are in the range 25% to 50%.

All other data appearing in 2007 Edition 1 is the same as for 2006 Edition 2.

MAIN FEATURES

ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

This publication presents a statistical overview of sports and physical recreation in Australia, using the latest data available from a diverse range of ABS collections.

Wherever possible, the information contained in this publication has been presented in accordance with the Australian Culture and Leisure Classifications. These include separate classifications for industry, products and occupation. For details refer to Australian Culture and Leisure Classifications, 2001 (cat. no. 4902.0).

This edition of the publication is the third update since its release in an on-line version on 29 March 2006, and follows the previous update (2006 Edition 2) on 10 November 2006. The data which debut in this edition appear in chapters 8 and 11 and concern

  • international trade in sports and physical recreation goods
  • building approvals for sports and physical recreation buildings
  • engineering construction of sports and physical recreation facilities.

In addition, from this edition onwards, chapters 12-14 (concerning other leisure) will no longer be part of the publication. This restricts the subject matter to sports and physical recreation only. Relevant information from chapter 13 concerning manufacturers of toys and sporting goods, wholesalers of toys and sporting goods, and sports hospitality clubs has been transferred to chapter 10.

Only a selection of the available data about sports and physical recreation has been included in this publication. For information about other relevant data, contact the NCCRS in the Adelaide Office of the ABS.
