VALUE OF WORK DONE, CHAIN VOLUME MEASURES

TOTAL BUILDING
  • The trend estimate of the value of total building work done fell 1.7% in the March 2009 quarter.
  • The seasonally adjusted March quarter estimate of the value of total building work done fell 4.7%, to $17,491.9m, following a rise of 0.4% in the December 2008 quarter.


NEW RESIDENTIAL
  • The trend estimate of the value of new residential building work fell 2.9% in the latest quarter, with new houses falling 3.9% and new other residential building falling 0.6%. Alterations and additions to residential building fell 2.1%.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of new residential work done fell 7.0% to $8,268.9m. Work done on new houses fell 9.0% to $5,631.1m, while new other residential building fell 2.5% to $2,637.8m. Alterations and additions fell 3.2% to $1,551.8m.


NON-RESIDENTIAL
  • The trend estimate of the value of non-residential building work done in the quarter fell 0.3% in March. This follows a rise of 0.2% in December.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of non-residential building work done in the quarter fell 2.5% in March, following a rise of 2.0% in December.

This publication updates the preliminary estimates released in Construction Work Done, Australia (cat. no. 8755.0) on 27 May 2009. The data in this publication are based on a response rate of approximately 96% of the value of building work done during the quarter. The data are subject to revision when returns from the following quarter are processed. Final data for the March quarter 2009 will be released in Building Activity, Australia (cat. no. 8752.0) on 14 October 2009.


CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

Commencing with the September 2009 issue of this publication, the Time Series Electronic Tables 78 and 79 listed on page 55 of this issue will no longer be available on the ABS web site. A concordance between the 1986 Functional Classification of Buildings (FCB) and the 1999 FCB is available in the classification manual - ABS Functional Classification of Buildings, 1999 (cat. no. 1268.0.55.001).
