SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS TO AUSTRALIA, AUGUST 2003 PRELIMINARY

The data presented in this release are preliminary and subject to revision. The ABS encourages users of this data to refer to the ABS monthly publication, Overseas Arrivals and Departures, Australia (cat. no. 3401.0) for final estimates. The release of the preliminary short-term visitor arrivals series will cease in December 2003 with the release of preliminary estimates for November 2003.

Trend estimate

Trend estimates have been revised to take into account the impact of recent world events. See paragraph 18 of the Explanatory Notes for more detail.

The preliminary trend estimate for August 2003 (415,100) continuing the steady monthly increase in the series since April 2003.

Seasonally adjusted

From July 2003, concurrent seasonal adjustment replaced the foward factor method used to derive seasonally adjusted estimates. See paragraphs 12 to 15 of the Explanatory Notes for more detail.

The preliminary seasonally adjusted estimate of short-term visitor arrivals to Australia for August 2003 (391,300) represents a slight decrease (less than 1%) compared to the previous month.

Original

The preliminary estimate for short-term visitor arrivals to Australia for August 2003 was 360,400. This represents a decrease of 3% compared to August 2002 (371,900). Compared to August 2002, preliminary estimates suggest that visitors from Japan and China declined by 18% and 16% respectively.
