SEPTEMBER KEY POINTS


BALANCE OF PAYMENTS
  • The current account deficit, seasonally adjusted, fell $4,585m (29%) to $11,358m in the September quarter 2016. The deficit on the balance on goods and services fell $2,699m (37%) to $4,682m. The primary income deficit fell $1,946m (24%) to $6,265m.
  • In seasonally adjusted chain volume terms, the surplus on goods and services fell $871m (61%) from $1,432m in the June quarter 2016 to $561m in the September quarter 2016. This is expected to detract 0.2 percentage points from growth in the September quarter 2016 volume measure of GDP.


INTERNATIONAL INVESTMENT POSITION (IIP)
  • Australia's net IIP liability position was $1,043.3b at 30 September 2016, an increase of $5.4b (1%) on the revised 30 June 2016 position of $1,037.9b. Australia's net foreign debt liability increased $0.8b to a net liability position of $1,048.5b. Australia's net foreign equity asset decreased $4.6b (47%) to a net asset position of $5.2b at 30 September 2016.
