ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION
This publication summarises the Essential Statistical Assets (ESA) for Australia initiative, including presenting the 2013 list of ESA for Australia, which was endorsed by the Australian Statistics Advisory Council in February 2013. The 2013 list of ESA for Australia represents the first holistic assessment of the most essential statistics to meet current user requirements undertaken in Australia. It has been developed through consultation with the community as well as users and producers of official statistics in Australia.
The publication also outlines the plan for the future phases of the ESA for Australia initiative. These include assessing the current quality of those statistics identified on the list; identifying the supporting statistical infrastructure that are vital for the production of high quality and trusted statistics; and identifying opportunities for the Australian Bureau of Statistics to work collaboratively with government agencies to make improvements to the statistical system where it would provide greatest benefit for official statistics in Australia.
