ABOUT THIS RELEASE

This paper focuses on the data quality of the Census questions used to derive Labour Force Status and follows similar analyses to those provided in previous Census Working Papers examining Labour Force Status data quality: 99/2 (1996) and 94/1 (1991). Information is presented about how various stages in the development and processing of the 2001 Census might have impacted on the data from these questions. Analyses of key indicators such as non-response rates, intercensal changes, and comparisons with the Labour Force Survey provide an indication of data quality. Finally, this paper provides suggestions for possible improvements in form design and processing, which could result in higher data quality outcomes for the 2006 Census.
