AUGUST KEY POINTS


SHORT-TERM VISITOR ARRIVALS TO AUSTRALIA
  • Trend estimates: Short-term visitor arrivals during August 2013 (534,800 movements) increased 0.5% compared with July 2013 (532,100 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.5% in both June and July 2013. The current trend estimate for arrivals is 4.3% higher than in August 2012.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During August 2013, short-term visitor arrivals (541,400 movements) recorded an increase of 2.3% compared with July 2013 (529,300 movements). This followed a monthly increase of 7.5% in June and a monthly decrease of 6.2% in July 2013. The spike in June was mainly driven by the British and Irish Lions rugby union tour.
  • Original estimates: There were 530,900 short-term visitor arrivals to Australia in August 2013.


SHORT-TERM RESIDENT DEPARTURES FROM AUSTRALIA
  • Trend estimates: Short-term resident departures during August 2013 (739,500 movements) increased 0.5% compared with July 2013 (735,900 movements). This follows monthly increases of 0.9% in June and 0.7% in July 2013. The current trend estimate for departures is 8.0% higher than in August 2012.
  • Seasonally adjusted estimates: During August 2013, short-term resident departures (736,000 movements) decreased 0.1% compared with July 2013 (736,700 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.8% in June 2013 and 0.3% in July 2013.
  • Original estimates: There were 730,400 short-term resident departures from Australia during August 2013.
