CHANGE IN COLLECTION SCOPE
  • The scope for the 2015-16 Agricultural Census was all agricultural businesses with an Estimated Value of Agricultural Operations (EVAO) of $40,000 or greater. This is a change from previous ABS rural environment and agricultural collections, where a scope of EVAO of $5,000 or greater was used. This change was foreshadowed in February 2016 in Agricultural Census: Nature and Content, 2015-16 (cat. no 7100.1).
  • This scope change impacts some components of VACP but not others. Where information is sourced from the Agricultural Census there will be an impact on these estimates, including for crops. The value of livestock disposals and livestock products (except for eggs) is sourced from other information and is not impacted by the Agricultural Census scope change.

PRELIMINARY KEY POINTS
  • The gross value of Australia's wheat has fallen to $6.1 billion as national production levels decreased 6% and global export prices remained stagnant.
  • Grain sorghum gross value decreased to $477 million following the high of 2014-15, driven by lower production (down 18%) and a smaller export market.
  • Oats gross value increased 39% to $396 million, off the back of a 13% increase in national production and higher domestic and export prices.
  • The gross value of disposals of cattle and calves increased to $13.1 billion in the 2015-16 financial year, driven by high slaughter returns.
  • The national gross value of sheep and lambs has seen a slight decline, with a realised gross value of $3.2 billion.
  • The gross value of poultry has continued its upward trend in 2015-16, with a total realised gross value of $2.7 billion. There is strong domestic demand, underpinned by favourable price competition with pork and red meat.
