SUMMARY

In 2011-12, there were a total of 10,809 defendants finalised in Australia's criminal courts with at least one federal offence: 977 in the Higher Courts; 9,640 in the Magistrates' Courts; and 191 in the Children's Courts.

For All Courts, there were 10,074 persons and 735 organisations finalised in 2011-12 compared with 10,426 persons and 396 organisations in 2010-11. In 2011-12, of all finalised defendants, 71% (7,697) were male and 21% (2,237) were female.

At the All Courts level, 70% of defendants finalised were proven guilty of at least one federal offence. Of those proven guilty, 17% of defendants were sentenced to a custodial order.

The 10,809 defendants represented a total of 38,150 federal offences finalised; a ratio of 3.5 offences per defendant compared with 3.9 offences per defendant in 2010-11. There were 3,822 federal offences finalised in the Higher Courts, 34,059 in the Magistrates' Courts, and 269 in the Children's Courts.
