The crude Tasmanian death rate for 2000 was 7.9 per thousand of mid-year population, which along with South Australia was the highest of any State or Territory in Australia. The Australian crude death rate for 2000 was 6.7 deaths per thousand of mid-year population.

In comparison, the 2000 Tasmanian standardised death rate (which allows a comparison of death rates between populations with different age structures by relating them to a standard population) was 6.2 thousand of mid-year population, which was the second highest after the Northern Territory (8.9). The Australian standardised death rate was 5.7 per thousand of mid-year population.
