At 30 June 2003, Tasmania's resident population was estimated at 477,077, or 2.4% of the Australian total of 19,880,599. Of the Tasmanian population:

  • Greater Hobart-Southern Region accounted for 49.2%, with 234,894 people
  • Northern Region accounted for 28.3%, with 135,067 people
  • Mersey-Lyell Region accounted for 22.5%, with 107,116 people.
