NEW MOTOR VEHICLE SALES

  • Sales of new motor vehicles in seasonally adjusted terms increased slightly (0.6%) for the month of August 2009. However, new motor vehicles sales in August 2009 (7,995) were 17% lower than in August 2008 (9,681).
  • The decline in motor vehicle sales from the peak figure (9,826) in July 2008 was driven by falls in the sales of passenger vehicles. Between August 2008 and August 2009, sales of passenger vehicles fell by almost 15%.
  • The sales of sports utility vehicles, including four wheel drive vehicles in the higher price ranges, fell by 6% over the same 12 month period.
