MAIN TYPE OF BROADBAND CONNECTION USED

Businesses using broadband as their main internet connection were asked to specify the main type of broadband connection in use at 30 June 2010.

The most common broadband connection type used was Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), with 73% of broadband users identifying this as their main connection type. It was the most common connection type for all sizes of business. At 18%, Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) as the main type of broadband connection was most prevalent among businesses with 200 or more persons employed, more than quadruple the proportion of any other employment size group.

Businesses in Rental, hiring and real estate services were most likely to have DSL as the main type of broadband connection (85%), followed by Retail trade (82%). The industry with the lowest proportion of businesses with DSL as the main type of broadband connection was Agriculture, forestry and fishing (40%). However, this industry had the highest proportions for businesses with a satellite broadband connection (26%), mobile wireless (18%) and fixed wireless (12%).
