The quarrying of limestone is the earliest recorded mining activity in Tasmania for non-metallic minerals other than coal. The occurrence of limestone is widespread in western and northern Tasmania, and there are extensive resources of silica throughout Tasmania. Dolomite occurs in a number of places in the north west, central and southern Tasmania.
