Australian vehicles covered 209 billion km last year: ABS


Vehicles registered in Australia travelled 209 billion kilometres in the 12 months ended 31 October 2006, according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The average distance covered by the 14.4 million registered vehicles in Australia was 14,600 km, with Queensland vehicles travelling the furthest - 15,600 kilometres on average. Tasmanian vehicles travelled the least of all states and territories, covering 13,500 kilometres on average.

Business travel made up a third of all kilometres (33%) travelled, while travelling to and from work accounted for a quarter (25%). Travel within capital cities made up just over half (55%) of all vehicle travel.

Passenger vehicles travelled a total of 156 billion kilometres, 75% of all vehicle distance. The average distance travelled by passenger vehicles was 13,900 km. The average articulated truck travelled 88,300 kilometres, buses 30,300 kilometres and motor cycles 3,600.

A total of 28.9 billion litres of fuel was used including 19.0 billion litres of petrol and 8.6 billion litres of diesel. Passenger vehicles used 86% of the petrol while freight vehicles used 86% of the diesel.

Passenger vehicles averaged 11.4 litres of fuel per hundred kilometres, articulated trucks 55.6, and motor cycles, 6.4.
