INTRODUCTION

Perinatal deaths comprise stillbirths (fetal deaths) and deaths of infants within the first 28 days of life (neonatal deaths). New scope definitions have been applied to the perinatals collection to achieve consistency between ABS collections and other external collections. These new scope rules have been applied to perinatal data from 1999 onwards. Data for the years 1999-2006 have been revised and are republished, along with 2007 perinatal data in this publication. See Explanatory Notes 18-20 for further information.
