BUILDING WORK DONE
  • The trend estimate of the value of total building work done rose 0.5% in the December 2012 quarter.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of total building work done rose 1.2% to $20,031.6m in the December quarter, following a fall of 0.1% in the September 2012 quarter.


NEW RESIDENTIAL BUILDING WORK DONE
  • The trend estimate of the value of new residential building work done rose 1.4% in the December quarter. The value of work done on new houses rose 1.1% while new other residential building rose 1.8%.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of new residential building work done rose 1.7% to $9,909.8m. Work done on new houses rose 2.3% to $6,418.9m, while new other residential building rose 0.5% to $3,490.9m.


NON-RESIDENTIAL WORK DONE
  • The trend estimate of the value of non-residential building work done fell 0.5% in the December quarter.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate of the value of non-residential building work done in the quarter rose 0.7%, following a fall of 2.7% in the September 2012 quarter.

TOTAL DWELLINGS
  • The trend estimate for the total number of dwelling units commenced rose 3.5% in the December 2012 quarter following a rise of 4.5% in the September quarter.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for the total number of dwelling units commenced fell 2.3% in the December quarter following a rise of 7.4% in the September quarter.


NEW PRIVATE SECTOR HOUSES
  • The trend estimate for new private sector house commencements rose 2.9% in the December quarter following a rise of 2.4% in the September quarter.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for new private sector house commencements fell 0.4% in the December quarter following a rise of 6.1% in the September quarter.


NEW PRIVATE SECTOR OTHER RESIDENTIAL BUILDING
  • The trend estimate for new private sector other residential building commencements rose 4.0% in the December quarter following a rise of 7.0% in the September quarter.
  • The seasonally adjusted estimate for new private sector other residential building fell 4.5 in the December quarter following a rise of 6.4% in the December quarter.

ABOUT THIS ISSUE

This publication updates the preliminary estimates released in Construction Work Done, Australia (cat. no. 8755.0) on 27 February 2013. The data in this publication are based on a response rate of approximately 92% of the value of building work done during the quarter. The data are subject to revision when returns from the following quarter are processed. Final data for the December quarter 2012 will be released in the next release of this publication, Building Activity, Australia (cat. no. 8752.0) on 17 July 2013.


CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

A readily printable (PDF) publication is no longer released for this and future issues. Headline data items are presented in HTML format. Data series in the Time Series Spreadsheets are maintained and produced to the same timetable currently in place for this release.


SIGNIFICANT REVISIONS THIS ISSUE

Compared to the estimate published in Building Activity, Australia, September quarter 2012 (cat. no. 8752.0) released on 17 January 2013:
  • the total value of work done in Australia during September quarter 2012 has been revised upwards by $496.5m or 2.4%.
  • the total value of work commenced in Australia during September quarter 2012 has been revised upwards by $2,169.0m or 12.0%. This was driven by revisions to non-residential commencements of $1,178.9m (18.7%).
  • the number of dwelling unit commencements in the September quarter 2012 has been revised upwards by 2644 dwellings or 6.9%.


DATA NOTE

Several time series spreadsheets contain 'np' (not available for publication) annotations for the September quarter 2012 and December quarter 2012. This is due to confidential data being contained in these series.

The seasonally adjusted and trend values of Residential Building Work Commenced for the March, June and September 2012 quarters should be interpreted with caution and will be reanalysed for future publications. For more information about seasonal adjustment and trend estimates please refer to paragraphs 22 and 28 of the Explanatory Notes respectively.

The trend estimates should be interpreted with caution as the underlying behaviour of building activity may be affected by Government stimulus packages as well as other developments associated with global economic conditions.
