Tourism


This comprises the activities of persons travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year. The travel may be for leisure, business or other purposes so long as it is not related to the exercise of an activity remunerated from within the place visited.


Domestic travellers


These are persons who normally reside within Australia.


Inbound/international travellers


These are non-residents of Australia travelling into Australia for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes.

    Marketing expenditure


    For the purposes of this survey this comprised expenditure on a wide range of activities including advertising, promotion, publicity, consumer websites and sponsorship of Australian tourism. Detailed activities included:

    • advertising and publicity payments made directly to radio, television, online and print media
    • advertising agency payments
    • printing/collateral costs
    • marketing levies
    • trade show costs
    • payments to contractors, subcontractors and/or consultants for marketing
    • wages and salaries of own account employees involved in marketing activities
    • web site expenditure related to marketing expenditure committed on behalf of a business by related overseas companies
    • in-kind marketing
    • familiarisation costs.


    Outbound travellers


    These are residents of Australia travelling outside of Australia for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes.
