INDUSTRY TRENDS


MONTHLY SEASONALLY ADJUSTED AND TREND ESTIMATES


TOTAL RETAIL

There has been moderate trend growth for 18 months. Food retailing, the major contributor, has had two months of moderate trend growth following four months of strong growth. Hospitality and services has had four months of moderate trend growth. In May 2007, all other industries had weak trend growth or were in decline.

FOOD RETAILING

There has been moderate trend growth for two months, following four months of strong growth. South Australia has had six months of moderate growth, while New South Wales and Victoria both had weak trend growth in May following periods of moderate growth.Western Australia had moderate growth in May 2007 following seven months of strong growth. Queensland (six months), Tasmania (six months) and the Australian Capital Territory (five months) have had strong growth.

DEPARTMENT STORES

There has been weak trend growth for the last three months. New South Wales and South Australia have had weak trend growth for three months. Western Australia had moderate growth in May 2007, while the other published states were in decline.

CLOTHING AND SOFT GOOD RETAILING

Trend growth has been varied across the different states and territories with strong growth in Western Australia (five months) and the Australian Capital Territory (seven months). By contrast, New South Wales (two months) and South Australia (four months) have been in decline.

HOUSEHOLD GOOD RETAILING

Trend growth has been slowing since December 2006 with weak growth in May 2007. New South Wales has followed a similar pattern with weak trend growth in May 2007. Victoria has had weak trend growth for the last three months. Queensland had moderate growth in May 2007 following 12 months of strong trend growth.

RECREATIONAL GOOD RETAILING

The trend growth has been in decline for four months. New South Wales (five months), Victoria (two months), South Australia (13 months) and Western Australia (five months) have been in decline. Queensland has had weak trend growth for three months.

OTHER RETAILING

The trend for Other retailing has been in decline for nine months. Victoria (11 months) and South Australia (three months) have been in decline. New South Wales had moderate trend growth in May 2007, while Queensland had weak growth. Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory were flat in May.

TOTAL RETAIL (EXCLUDING HOSPITALITY AND SERVICES)

Over the last seven months, the trend growth for Total retail (excluding Hospitality and services) has been slightly stronger than Total industries (including Hospitality and services).

HOSPITALITY AND SERVICES

There has been moderate trend growth for four months. Queensland (four months) and South Australia (four months) have had strong trend growth. Western Australia had weak trend growth in May 2007 following 15 months of strong growth, while Victoria has been in decline for five months. New South Wales was flat in May.
