TOTAL RETAIL - MONTHLY

The chart below shows the trend series and seasonally adjusted series to December 2018.

In current prices, the trend estimate for Australian turnover rose 0.2% in December 2018. This follows a rise of 0.2% in November 2018 and a rise of 0.2% in October 2018.

The seasonally adjusted estimate for Australian turnover fell 0.4% in December 2018. This follows a rise of 0.5% in November 2018 and a rise of 0.3% in October 2018.

The original estimate for Australian turnover rose 20.1% in December 2018. The original estimate for chains and other larger retailers rose 23.6% in December 2018. The original estimate for smaller retailers rose 11.9% in December 2018.

TOTAL RETAIL - QUARTERLY

In volume terms, the seasonally adjusted estimate for the December quarter 2018 rose 0.1%, following a rise of 0.2% in the September quarter 2018 and a rise of 1.0% in the June quarter 2018.

In the December quarter 2018 the seasonally adjusted estimate rose in volume terms for Clothing, footwear and personal accessories retailing (2.7%), and Department stores (0.7%). Food retailing (-0.2%), Other retailing (-0.5%), Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (-0.5%), and Household goods retailing (-0.3%) all fell in seasonally adjusted terms in the December quarter 2018.

The Implicit Price Deflator for Australian turnover rose 0.6% in seasonally adjusted terms in the December quarter 2018.


TOTAL RETAIL - BY STATE

The following states and territories rose in trend terms in December 2018: Queensland (0.5%), Victoria (0.2%), Western Australia (0.3%), the Australian Capital Territory (0.3%), South Australia (0.1%), and Tasmania (0.1%). New South Wales (-0.1%), and the Northern Territory (-0.4%) both fell in trend terms in December 2018.

The following states and territories fell in seasonally adjusted terms in December 2018: New South Wales (-0.6%), Victoria (-0.5%), the Australian Capital Territory (-1.8%), Queensland (-0.1%), South Australia (-0.3%), the Northern Territory (-0.3%), and Tasmania (-0.2%). Western Australia (0.1%) rose in seasonally adjusted terms in December 2018.

In the December quarter 2018, the seasonally adjusted estimate rose in volume terms in the following states: Queensland (1.2%), Victoria (0.5%), Western Australia (0.9%), and the Australian Capital Territory (0.9%). New South Wales (-1.1%), the Northern Territory (-1.7%), South Australia (-0.1%), and Tasmania (-0.3%) all fell in the December quarter 2018.
