SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE

The ABS defines social media presence as including web and mobile-based technologies which are used to turn communication into interactive dialogue among organisations, communities and individuals. These include: blogs and micro-blogs such as Twitter; content communities such as YouTube; and social networking sites, such as Facebook and LinkedIn.

Overall, more than one in three businesses had a social media presence (34%) as at 30 June 2015.

The proportion of businesses with a social media presence was greater than those without for businesses with 20-199 and 200 or more persons employed (57% and 71% respectively).

Proportion of businesses with a social media presence, by industry, 2014-15

The Arts and recreation services industry recorded the highest proportion of businesses with a social media presence (67%), followed by the Information media and telecommunications industry (57%). The Agriculture, forestry and fishing industry had the lowest proportion of businesses with a social media presence (6%).
