Innovation-active businesses

The proportion of businesses which were innovation-active (i.e. those which undertook any innovative activity) increased by 8 percentage points to 45% in 2007-08.


Innovating businesses

During the year ended 30 June 2008, 39% of Australian businesses reported introducing at least one type of innovation. This represents a 7 percentage point increase from the previous year.

Each of the four broad types of innovation increased when compared to the previous year. The most frequently reported type of innovation in both years was the introduction of new goods or services, which increased by 4 percentage points in 2007-08, to 22%. This was followed by innovation in new organisational/managerial processes at 19%, an increase from the 16% reported in the year ended 30 June 2007. Operational processes and marketing methods were reported by 18% and 15% of businesses respectively, both modest increases from 2006-07.


Innovation still in development

Over 22% of businesses reported innovative activity still in development as at 30 June 2008, an increase of 5 percentage points from the previous year.


Abandoned innovative activity

The proportion of businesses that abandoned at least one type of innovative activity was 7% during the year ended 30 June 2008, a minimal change from the 6% reported for 2006-07.
